Stroll along Crafton's streets
and you'll see one reason why the Crafton Historical Society was
founded - beautiful turn-of-the-century homes. Although Crafton
comprises just one square mile, there are more fine turn-of-the-century
homes here than in many other Pittsburgh neighborhoods. Members
of the Crafton Historical Society believe these houses and Crafton's
rich history are worth preserving.
The impetus for
establishing the Crafton Historical Society was the borough’s
1992 centennial. A group of individuals met in 1987 to discuss how
a community group could highlight the historical significance of
the town. The founding members, led by Kathy Vincent, believed that
capturing Crafton's history in writing and promoting the preservation
and restoration of Crafton's homes were two vital goals for the
group.
Today the society has become a key component of the community by
offering residents a variety of programs, events and educational
opportunities.
